What to expect at a Costa Rican Walmart
If you’re picturing a US supercenter, adjust your expectations. Costa Rican Walmarts are supermarkets with a general merchandise section, not the sprawling one-stop stores found in the United States. There’s no auto centre, no garden centre on that scale, and the non-food selection is limited.
Prices are in colones
Prices are quoted in Costa Rican colones. Most stores accept US dollars, but the exchange rate applied at the till is usually worse than a bank’s, and your change will come back in colones. Card payment is straightforward.
Imported goods cost noticeably more
Anything imported — American brands in particular — carries a significant premium over US prices. Local products, fresh produce and Costa Rican staples are where the value is. Visitors are often surprised that a familiar cereal box costs two or three times what it does at home.
No membership required
Walmart in Costa Rica is open to everyone, with no membership. That’s the difference from PriceSmart, the country’s warehouse club, which does require a paid membership.
Other supermarket chains
Walmart is part of the same group as Más x Menos, Maxi Palí and Palí in Costa Rica. Palí is the discount format with the lowest prices and the most basic presentation; Maxi Palí sits between Palí and Walmart; Más x Menos is the more upmarket supermarket. Automercado, a separate company, is the premium option.
Frequently asked questions about Walmart Costa Rica
How many Walmart stores are there in Costa Rica?

Which Walmart in Costa Rica opens earliest?
Walmart Santa Ana, at 7:30 am, every day of the week. Every other store opens at 8 am.
What are Walmart Costa Rica’s opening hours?
Most stores open Sunday to Thursday from 8 am to 10 pm and Friday to Saturday from 8 am to 11 pm. Santa Ana opens at 7:30 am daily and closes at 10 pm, and Ciudad Quesada runs 8 am to 10 pm every day.

Yes. Walmart Alajuela is the closest store to Juan Santamaría International Airport, 400 m south of Hospital San Rafael on the Francisco J. Orlich radial.
Is there a Walmart in Guanacaste?
One, in Liberia, 300 m west of Hotel El Sitio. It’s the main supply stop for visitors staying near the Guanacaste beaches and is close to Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport.
Do Walmart stores in Costa Rica accept US dollars?
Most do, but the exchange rate applied at the register is typically worse than a bank’s, and change is given in colones. Paying by card or in colones usually works out better.
Do I need a membership to shop at Walmart in Costa Rica?
No. Walmart is open to everyone. PriceSmart, the warehouse club, is the one that requires a paid membership.
Is Walmart Costa Rica the same as a US Walmart?
Not quite. Costa Rican Walmarts are supermarkets with a general merchandise section rather than full supercenters. The food selection is strong, but the non-food range is much smaller than in the United States, and imported American brands carry a substantial price premium.
