Costa Rica’s National Museum

Costa Rica’s National Museum (Museo Nacional) was founded on May 4th, 1887, at the time the President was Don Bernardo Soto and the Minister of Public Works Don Cleto González Víquez. This museum emerged in Costa Rica at a moment in which liberal ideas and principles of peace, progress and education material, characterized the society of 1880, where the laws related to education and the creation of cultural institutions prompted the birth of the museum. As an institution the museum belonged to the Development Ministry, to the University of Costa Rica and then again to the Education Ministry so that finally in the 1970s, became part of the Ministry of Culture and Youth.

The National Museum has occupied four different locations throughout its history. Three of these premises were demolished. Currently the museum is located next to the Plaza de la Democracia (Democracy Square) at the building of the Former Bellavista Barracks. This place is the product of a series of transformations of the house that built the German naturalist Alexander Von Frantzius in 1870 and in 1876 purchased the Costa Rican educator Don Mauro Fernández. The property was vacant from 1910 to 1914. In 1914 the government of Alfredo González Flores purchased it for the purpose of using it as barracks. In 1948 it stopped to serve as barracks, this is when the army was abolished as a permanent institution, and it became an education and cultural center, hosting since then The National Museum.

The National Museum is a cultural center for excellence. It’s walls protect the unalterable of the history of Costa Ricans, it not only teaches about the history of the nation, but also presents exhibitions of pre-Columbian art (pottery, stone, gold) and has a room with art from the colonial period, furniture and displays of natural history. Since its inception, the Museum promotes research projects in the areas of natural history, anthropology and Costa Rica’s history.

La Máscara Theater, Costa Rica

A quarter century after it’s creation, La Máscara Theater (The Mask theater) continues active and setting the pace in the performing arts in our country, being Bernal García Segura not just a co-founder, but also professor and director.

In addition to its high acting level novelty proposals, this theatrical institution also provides a range of courses so that all people have the opportunity to discover the actor inside.

To learn how to act is necessary to approve the four levels required by the curriculum that La Máscara Theater has prepared, with a duration of one year for each level. The first year is devoted to introduce students in the art of acting, through classroom practice, which helps to verify and measure the potential of each student.

The second level is the first assembly of a play for each student to feel the adrenaline and strengthen their talents in the stage.

In the third year, students undertake a work of magical realism where they have a very active role, because it teaches to write and perform the installation themselves, under the direction of García, the theater’s director.

Finally on the fourth level, and as a final test, students will have the opportunity to make a classic, contemporary or universal montage, which will be presented to the public on the stage of La Máscara Theater. At this level they wil also seek for new talent, that besides having acting skills, can manage the overall direction of the staging, because it will be on their hands.

For García, an actor is not formed with a course, and must be prepared to spend several months training to achieve a good level, with hard work and study, that’s why the dynamic is prepared in a manner where with the process it can be debugged and ensure the quality of teaching. One requirement is to be over 15 years and to have the disposition. Registration for these action courses are opened regularly, the groups do not exceed 12 people at most, to ensure quality and personalized attention at each of the classes.

La Máscara Theater is located diagonal to Flor de Lyz Hotel, 100m west and 25m south of Mi Tierra restaurant, in San José, Costa Rica.

Dedicated to the memory of the great tenor Manuel Salazar Zúñiga or Melico Salazar, whose performances in New York’s City Music Hall and the Scala Theater in Milan, to name a few world culture centers, showed the world the potential of the Costa Rican artist. His golden voice led him to be recognized worldwide, with performances across America and Europe. His last years were spent in Costa Rica, dedicated to teaching his passion, music.

The idea of creating the Melico Salazar Theater came from the Spanish born José Raventós, that to accomplish his dream of being able to play zarzuelas and operettas, decided to buy a land in San José and use it for the construction of the existing theater. José Fabio Garnier Ugalde, playwright and architect, was the person who designed the theater. Construction began on February 8, 1927, and ended with the opening on October 7, 1928 with the representation from the Operetta Society by Esperanza Iris. In 1960 a new gallery was added, which also included a new cinemascope screen.

Some seven years later, in 1967, during the early morning of April 23, a fire destroyed the building. Early in the seventies, the Ministry of Culture and Youth, came up with the idea of buying the theater to renew it, which achieves at a later time. In December 1981 there is a preopening of the theater, but soon after, public access is closed to complete the restoration. The reopening was in March 6, 1985, and in April 7 of the following year, the official government newspaper, “La Gaceta”, announced the law 7023, that gave the Melico Salazar’s theater the position of “specialized cultural institution” of the Costa Rican state.

Its architectural beauty sets the trend in the Baroque style, surrounded by Corinthians pilasters, which enhances the Melico Salazar Theater prominences that adorn its facade. It consists of four levels with stall seats, boxes and the gallery.

At present the Melico Salazar Theater is the popular culture forum in the country, which is complemented by numerous theaters and art galleries, public and private, permanently offering its collection to the national public and, particularly to the capital’s people. Hence, it is one of the most important artistic representations of the country, where high-level performances in the disciplines of theater, dance, multicultural events, classical, traditional and contemporary demonstrations are presented.
