Palo Seco Beach Costa Rica is a beautiful, pristine and unspoiled 9 km (5 mile) long palm tree lined beach, usually deserted even though it is very close to Manuel Antonio National Park. This beach has greys sands and blue waters located on the Central Pacific area, near the town of Parrita. The beach has the Pacific Ocean on its southern shore, the Pirris River mouth to the West and the Palo Seco Estuary on its northern shore. This estuary is a popular area for mangrove tours to view its vast wildlife such as white-faced monkeys and an a great variety of birds. Also, the local Palo Seco Elementary School has a sea turtle sanctuary program which has helped to protect, hatch and release thousands of “Baby Sea Turtles” whose mothers come ashore here to lay their eggs, being the best time to see the baby sea turtle hatchlings from August through November.

Also, the navigable estuary at Palo Seco Beach offers great fishing for snook (robalo), snapper and grouper, so gives a great opportunity to get on the water and see some incredible wildlife firsthand. In fact, the world record snook was caught from the surf on this beach. In the other hand, the estuary is also home to crocodiles, toucans, scarlet macaws, monkeys, sloths and more.

Palo Seco Beach is indeed a hidden jewel of the Central Pacific area in Parrita, Puntarenas, costa Rica, a medium sized Costa Rican town that offers pretty much of what any homeowner or vacationer might need such as banks, health clinics, groceries, stores, restaurants, bars, small hotels, and more. Also, a full service hospital is located in Quepos, just 25 minutes away. The mountains and town of Parrita, 10 minutes away, rise above the estuary and offer vacationers many delights such as canopy tours, white-water rafting, quad and jungle tours, hot springs, waterfalls and more.

If you ever wanted to see a truly unspoiled Costa Rican beach then you must visit Palo Seco Beach, where every late afternoon offers a chance to see a picture-postcard sunsets, where one feels apart from the hustle and bustle of the larger beach towns yet close enough to them by 20-30 minutes should one want to go. Drive north towards Puntarenas on route #27. Take the Pozón exit (to Jaco), and continue for about 80 km (50 miles), passing over the Tarcoles river and the towns of Jaco, Hermosa, Esterillos and Parrita. Turn right at the Palo Seco Beach entrance and continue for some 4.5 km (3 miles) until you reach the beach. This route requires a total of 3 hour from San Jose.

From Daniel Oduber International Airport (LIR)

Drive to the northeast towards Liberia. Once in Liberia, continue along the same highway to Puntarenas for about 120 km (75 miles). Once at the entrance to Puntarenas, continue on route #27 to San Jose for about 25 km (15 miles) until you reach the exit to Pozon and Jaco, take it and continue for about 80 km (50 miles), passing over the Tarcoles river and the towns of Jaco, Hermosa, Esterillos and Parrita. Turn right at the Palo Seco Beach entrance and continue for some 4.5 km (3 miles) until you reach the beach. This route requires a total of 4.5 hours.

Palma Beach Costa Rica also known as Bandera Beach, is a quiet stretch of open ocean beach type of about 6.7 km long, with gray sands and strong surf blue waters surrounded by lush tropical vegetation, which provides good shade for campers, located in Parrita, Puntarenas, Costa Rica.

Palma has rich fisheries, which makes it an ideal beach for fishing and is also perfect for walks along the coast or try some water sports like swimming, diving and snorkeling . However, at low tide, it is recommended to take precautions to swimmers.

Although Palma Beach is easily accessible, has minimal development, with few options for lodging and meals.

Bejuco Beach Costa Rica is a quiet and beautiful dark sand beach, with blue waters, and surrounded by lush tropical vegetation, mostly by palms and almond trees, with powerful crystal clear waves ranging from moderate to strong ideal for surfing and fishing, as well as its neighboring beaches, located on the Pacific coast of Puntarenas, Costa Rica. This beach limited on its back, with Bejuco River and an area of ​​mangroves, also the mouth of the river has sandy banks for your enjoyment.

Bejuco is higly recommended for tourists looking for uncrowded beaches for a relaxing holiday, as it is easy to spend the whole day at Bejuco and not see another person.

Esterillos Beach Costa Rica is a vast and beautiful beach of nearly 7km extension with gray sands, crystal blue waters that invite you to go for a swim, and natural wealth all along the coast with palms and almond trees that line a forest edge, located on the central Pacific coast, in the canton of Parrita, Puntarenas, costa Rica.

Esterillos is divided into three sections: Esterillos Oeste beach to the West, Esterillos Centro beach in the middle, and Esterillos Este beach to the East. The part of Esterillos Centro and Esterillos Este, boasts gorgeous mangrove swamps, while Esterillos Oeste has small creeks and headlands, which are excellent points for observation of both wildlife and lush landscapes.

This part of the Central Pacific has one of the most consistent and cleanest breaks for surfers. Waves frequently break head high and are terrific all year long, but common consensus says that the West Coast is often better. These strong waves are best surfed while the tide level is rising, that is when the swells get big. Besides surfing, the waters are friendly towards all sorts of activities, such as diving, snorkeling and swimmers, always taking into account the necessary precautions. At low tide, the size of the beach increases dramatically, creating an extense dark sanded beach waiting to be explored, making it ideal for long walks or horseback riding.

Esterillos Beach features easy access, a wide array of accommodation options as well as a legal camping site. Here you will find plenty of hotels and cabins sprinkled throughout the Esterillos area that has direct access to the beach, to stay either further back through the dense secondary forest, or in the beautiful hillside with spectacular views of this peaceful paradise.

Esterillos Beach is passable throughout the year, has bus service and for those interested in domestic flights Esterillos beach does offer a grassy airstrip.

Cataratas Cerro Redondo Wildlife Refuge Costa Rica

Cataratas Cerro Redondo Wildlife Refuge Costa Rica was created on August 12th, 1997, to protect tropical forested areas and part of the moors in the high elevations of the Talamanca Mountain region.

Because of its location in the Talamanca Mountain region, its biodiversity is very similar to the one you can find in Los Quetzales National Park (Former Los Santos Forest Reserve). It has tropical wet forest in transition to montane, rainy montane and lower rainy montane, with a very abundant flora and fauna, where oaks and cypress are very common, making bird watching the greatest attraction.

Other nearby national Parks include the Cerro Las Vueltas Biological Reserve, Los Quetzales National Park (Former Los Santos Forest Reserve), Paramo Wildlife Refuge and Manuel Antonio National Park. There are no public park facilities at this wildlife refuge.

Getting there:
The main entrance is located in Parrita and is accesible up to the town of San Rafael of Parrita (Pocares) all year long. The other option is in San Ramón of Tarrazu where the road reaches up to 950mts before the entrance, this one is 100km from San Jose.

By bus

Take a bus from the route San Jose – San Isidro de El General – Perez Zeledon which takes about 2 hours, making the stop at Macho Gaf Restaurant (MUSOC, 2222-2422 / TRACOPA, 2222-26-66). From here you can take taxi to Cataratas Cerro Redondo Wildlife Refuge.
