In January 1991, there was a need for a theater group in Perez Zeledón, a community which is located 136 km south of San José, Costa Rica.
Thus arises the idea of doing a show with actors from the community and provide a permanent space to many people who love this art. The first book chosen was “As coyol’s seed” (Como semilla e’coyol) by the Costa Rican writer Victor Valdelomar, presented on May 30th, 1991, a year from building the Cultural Complex theater.
The theater was named “Teatro Tabanco” to rescue the word for the top of the ranches where the natives slept to protect from the animals in the mountain. Thanks to this effort in Perez Zeledón plays are shown on a very regular basis, not just from the Tabanco Theater company, but also from other national and international groups.
In January 2006, it achieved a place in San José, Costa Rica, because Mr. Eduardo Zuñiga, decided to move away from the Chaplin Theater and gave the Tabanco Theater the opportunity to take charge of the company that has pioneered the independent theater in Costa Rica and Central America.
Thanks to the national tours for many years to the country’s schools, the effort to make a great audience in Perez Zeledón and acceptance and support from the people of Costa Rica, “Tabanco Productions” has become the name that entertains and brings joy to people.
