Iguanita beach is a beautiful and remote beach of gray sand and calm blue waters of 1.5 km long, located in Culebra Bay, in Guanacaste province. Iguanita beach is part of Iguanita Wildlife Refuge, therefore it has a great biological diversity through a wide area of mangrove forest that surrounds it.
Iguanita beach is ideal for a total relaxation vacation away from it all, where sunbathing, walking along its coastline and diving are the most popular activities.
Getting to Iguanita Beach in Guanacaste:
From San José
Drive north to Puntarenas and then follow the Pan-American highway until you reach Liberia. There, turn right, continue for 8 km (5 miles), turn right at the DO IT Center towards the Four Seasons Hotel and follow the road for about 6 km (3.7 miles), turn left on a gravel entry to Iguanita Wildlife Refuge and continue for 7.5 km (4.5 miles) until you reach Iguanita beach. The last 7km of the road are in poor condition, so a 4×4 vehicle is essential to reach this beach. This route requires a total of 5 to 6 hours from San José.
From Daniel Oduber International Airport (LIR)
Drive south to Santa Cruz for 8 km (5 miles), turn right at the DO IT Center towards the Four Seasons Hotel and follow the road for about 6 km (3.7 miles), turn left on a gravel entry to Iguanita Wildlife Refuge and continue for 7.5 km (4.5 miles) until you reach Iguanita beach. The last 7km of the road are in poor condition, so a 4×4 vehicle is essential to reach this beach.
By bus
There are no buses that comes to Iguanita beach, however you can take a bus from the route San José – Liberia, which takes about 5 hours (Pulmitan, +506 2222-1650) and then you can rent a car and drive or take a taxi to Iguanita beach, which takes about 40 minutes. We recommend buying the ticket the day before to ensure your space.
By plane:
You can also take a flight from the Juan Santamaria Airport to the Daniel Oduber airport at Liberia, either with Sansa or Aerobell Airlines every day. From here you can rent a car and drive or take a taxi to Iguanita beach, which takes about 15 minutes.
