Pan de Azucar Beach, also known as Sugar Beach, is an exceptionally beautiful white sanded and short beach of less than 1 km in length, located in Guanacaste province. Pan de Azucar Beach is ideal for a calm and relaxed vacation in paradise away from the crowd!
Pan de Azucar Beach has a lush beauty of natural richness along its coastline and rocky headlands at the ends with steep and rough waves, so visitors should take precautions especially when the tide is falling. Also, from Pan de Azucar beach visitors can see Potrero Beach, Plata Island and the Chocoyas Islands.
Getting to Pan de Azucar beach in Guanacaste:
From San José
Drive north to Puntarenas and then follow the highway to Liberia until you reach Belen. There, turn right and continue on the road until you get to Huacas. Once in Huacas, turn right towards Conchal and Flamingo for about 4.5 km (3 miles) until you reach an intersection. Follow the signs to Potrero or La Penca Beach and continue for 7 km (4 miles) more, turn left and continue for about 200 m (650 ft) until you get to Sugar Beach Hotel entrance, as this is also the entrance for Pan de Azucar beach. This route requires a total of 4 to 5 hours from San José.
From Daniel Oduber International Airport (LIR)
Drive south to Santa Cruz, pass the DO IT Center and take the next exit to Sardinal on your right. Continue on the road following the signs to RIU Hotel until you get to an intersection that takes you to Potrero beach or the Monkey Trail Canopy Tour. Continue on the road for about 9 km (5.6 miles) until you reach to Potrero. Turn right, continue for 3 km (2 miles), then turn left and continue for about 200 m (650 ft) until you get to Sugar Beach Hotel entrance, as this is also the entrance for Pan de Azucar beach.
By bus
Take a bus from the route San José – Huacas – Brasilito- Flamingo – Potrero, making the stop at Potrero or Flamingo beaches, which takes about 5 hours (Tralapa, +506 2221-7202 / +506 2680-0392). From Flamingo or Potrero you should take a taxi to Pan de Azucar Beach or walk to it. From Flamingo the beach is located about 7 km (4 miles) and from Potrero about 3 km (2 miles). We recommend buying the ticket a day earlier to be sure your seat is saved.
Or you can also take a bus to San Jose – Santa Cruz (Alfaro-Tracopa, +506 2222-2666) or Liberia – Santa Cruz (La Pampa, +506 2665-5891) and and then take a bus Santa Cruz – Flamingo – Potrero (Empresa El Folclórico, +506 2680-3161), making the stop at Potrero or Flamingo beaches, which takes about 5 hours (Tralapa, +506 2221-7202 / +506 2680-0392). From Flamingo or Potrero you should take a taxi to Pan de Azucar Beach or walk to it. From Flamingo the beach is located about 7 km (4 miles) and from Potrero about 3 km (2 miles).
By Plane
You can also take a flight from the Juan Santamaria Airport to the Tamarindo airport, either with Sansa or Aerobell Airlines every day. From here you can rent a car and drive or take a taxi to Pan de Azucar beach, which takes about 35 minutes.
