Getting to AmaTierra Retreat Hotel and Wellness Center: (there are 2 WAYS TO GET THERE)
Directions for the slower, meandering but paved all the way road: From Juan Santamaria International Airport follow the highway towards San Jose and look for the Intel exit on your right. Continue through the town of Belen until you see the Panasonic Building on your left. Here you have to turn left and drive for aprox. 5km on the Lindora-Belen road (South) until you get to an intersection. Take the exit to your rigth towards towards Ciudad Colon. Once you’re in Ciudad Colon, turn right at the gas station and then left, here you will see a green AmaTierra sign (on a car wash building) stating you are 35km from the Hotel. Go to the top of the hill through the town of Ciudad Colon and turn left before the dirt road. You will see a University of La Paz (Peace) sign on the left. Make sure you follow the road out of town (do not turn right to the U. for Peace), but veer right towards Puriscal and Turubari Park.
After about 20 minutes, you will arrive to Puriscal. About 300 meters past the gas station, you will see a sign for Turrubari. Turn left in front of the Red Cross/ICE building. Follow about 3 blocks past the church, and just after the stop light you must turn right and then you will follow the signs to Amatierra/Turubari Park. The Hotel is on the right side of the road 2km before San Pablo and you will see several Green AmaTierra Hotel signs to let you know you are close (always know that if you follow the signs to Turrubari Park that you are on the right track). This route requires a total of 2 hours from San Jose.
Directions for the NEW CALDERA HIGHWAY (Route 27): From Juan Santamaria International Airport follow the highway towards San Jose and look for the Intel exit on your right. Continue through the town of Belen until you see the Panasonic Building on your left. Here yo have to turn left and drive for aprox. 5km on the Lindora-Belen road (South) until you get to an intersection. Take the exit to your right towards Guacima and Orotina, which is a toll road. You will need colones (though they do make change for dollars, don’t worry).
Go straight on this road, past 2 tolls, the last one is Atenas. Past Pan de Azucar too, and take the exit at Escobal. At the top of the exit, turn left, then right at the end, onto the frontage road. Follow this to its end (about 1.2 km) and turn left. You stay on this little dirt road for about 15 minutes, over a 1 lane bridge, until you eventually get to a town called San Pablo, with a town square on the left. Go straight past the town about 2-3 blocks and you’ll see “Soda Francini” on the right. Turn left there, towards Puriscal. AmaTierra will be on your left side about 1km up the road. The new highway cuts off about 15 minutes but does involve a dirt road for about 15 minutes of the journey. This route requires a total of 1.5 hours from San Jose.
